SINOPSIS

SYNOPSIS

“Zew” is the story of a survivor of World War II who arrived in Buenos Aires in 1949. The flight from the Polish town began in 1939, when Jaime and Ruth, Zew’s parents, escaped the Nazis by crossing a mountain on foot to reach the Pentcho, the ship that would take them to Palestine, along with 500 other Jewish refugees. After multiple dangers, the ship was wrecked off a rocky and desert island. All the passengers  managed to save themselves and with their clothes, they wrote “SOS” on the ground. A fascist plane spotted them, and a battleship went to rescue them. They were installed in a prison camp on the island of Rhodes (Greece) then invaded by Italy. Zew was born there. It was 1941.

Due to lack of food, the following year they were transferred to Ferramonti, a concentration camp in Calabria, Italy. It was there that Zew lived his first years until 1943 when they were liberated by British troops. In the next few years, the family toured different cities looking for relatives and a safe place to live. They finally arrived in Argentina by boat in 1949 and settled down. In migrations, they registered him as José Kuten. In the 1960s, he began to study psychiatry, a profession he still practices nowadays and which made him a participant in the important experience of demanicomialization that took place at the Evita Hospital in the city of Lanús, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina

Zew reflects on his story motivated by the encounters and dialogues he has with other migrants in his Buenos Aires daily life, while he seeks to find in magic a fantastic way to narrate his experiences to his grandchildren.Gina (16 years old), the eldest granddaughter of the main character as narrator / animator of the story, upon meeting her grandfather’s testimony, begins to inquire about his ancestry and transforms the tale into an animated fi lm to retell it and grant permanence to the legacy. Finally, Zew manages to fi nd the magic trick with which he can transmit his story to his grandchildren, and transform the tragedy into learning filled with tenderness, imagination, and fantasy.
